Believe it or not: This bus is in no hurry to reach any destination
In Baden, near Zürich, a new bus service is challenging the rush of everyday life. Meet Line 0 – it has no fixed route, no timetable, and no destination –offering free rides where passengers can hop on and off at will. Created by twin artists Frank Riklin and Patrik Riklin, the initiative is designed as a social experiment to encourage people to slow down and reconnect. Instead of prioritising efficiency, it invites spontaneity and reflection. “Normally we are used to getting from A to B as efficiently as possible… But here, we are actually called upon to let go,” Frank Riklin said to a news outlet, reframing travel as an experience rather than a task. The architects of productive chaosFrank Riklin and Patrik Riklin are twin Swiss artists recognised for public art projects that spark dialogue and disrupt everyday routines. They previously made headlines with the Zero-Star Hotel — a bare double bed set in an open field, with no walls or roof. They also launched Bignik, a large-scale community initiative stitching thousands of fabric scraps into a single, landscape-spanning picnic blanket.
Now, with Line 0, they turn their attention to society’s fixation on efficiency. “Normally we’re obsessed with getting from A to B as fast as possible,” Frank Riklin said. “Here, we’re called upon to let go.”Why getting lost is the new luxuryIn an era of hyper-connectivity, Line 0 serves as a physical protest against the ‘Efficiency Cult.’ It’s a gentle nudge that human connection and aimless thinking are becoming endangered species, desperately in need of a protected reserve. Enter: a public bus whose only mission is to go absolutely nowhere, preferably past the same bakery for the fourth time.
